Stadium supports Earth Hour

The multi-event venue will join Nelson’s Column, Houses of Parliament and EDF Energy London Eye in London and millions of people turning off non-essential lights for 60 minutes to demonstrate their support for action against climate change.

The sustainable event stadium stepped up its commitment to sustainable development to achieve the British Standard (BS8901) ahead of any other UK stadia in 2011.

Following an active campaign at the Millennium Stadium, Facilities Manager Darren Crossman is happy to support the initiative that recognises that the actions we take – from the energy we use, to the food we buy and water we drink – have an effect on the world.

“The Millennium Stadium is very proud to be taking part in WWF’s Earth Hour and spreading the message about how what we do to our planet today, affects the communities and places of tomorrow,” he said.

“We take environmental issues very seriously at the Stadium and we would encourage all our member rugby clubs, fans and the people of Wales to take part in switching their lights off for just one hour in a demonstration for action on climate change.”

The venue’s green credentials already include recycling water, root zone and soil via the stadium’s unique palletised pitch system and more recent development such as the installation of LED lighting and lighting controls to reduce energy usage.

The stadium has also implemented various operational initiatives such as the promotion of public transport on event day and the Community Events initiative which allows 15 local charitable and community organisations to use the venue free of hire charge.

The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust has distributed £10million to community and charitable groups in Wales while the stadium’s major events have attracted more than one billion pounds into the south east Wales economy.
