Welcoming the Gallagher Premiership match to Wales is part of the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) strategy to generate funds through the use of Principality Stadium to the benefit all aspects of the game in Wales.

Bristol Bears announced their intention to bring the match to Wales last week, for their ‘Big Day Out’ in Cardiff on Saturday 10th May , but West Country rivals Bath were revealed as the opposition when season fixtures were announced this morning.

All four Welsh regional teams have United Rugby Championship (URC) matches outside of Wales on the weekend in question and the revenues raised by the WRU from supporting the event will directly benefit the professional game.

“We welcome Bristol Bears and Bath fans to Cardiff and look forward to another huge event at one of the greatest rugby Stadium’s in the world,” said Professional Rugby Board (PRB) chair Malcolm Wall, who also represents PRB on the WRU Board.

“We have been careful to ensure there is no clash with our Welsh regional clubs, with the Scarlets, Cardiff, Dragons and Ospreys all travelling to away fixtures in South Africa in the URC that weekend and we, of course, hope that some of the new fans we will be attracting to Cardiff will return for other rugby events.

“But, as well as being naturally excited about the fixture itself, the opportunity to bring much needed revenues into the Welsh game as a consequence is also hugely welcomed.”

The bumper Big Day Out at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff will see Bristol Bears take on West Country rivals Bath at one of the world’s top rugby arenas on Saturday, May 10th, with tickets going on sale at 2pm today (Tuesday, July 23rd).
